OWNERSHIP COST
Swimming pool running costs and maintenance
Running cost depends on pool size, water temperature, season, indoor or outdoor setting, cover use, heating method, pump/filtration strategy, electricity tariffs, water treatment and maintenance choices. A single monthly figure without those assumptions is not very informative.
Direct answer: Budget for energy, circulation and filtration, water treatment, cleaning, servicing and replacement items. Heating is often a major variable, while effective covers, controls and equipment choices can materially affect energy demand. Indoor pools can also require air-side heating and humidity control.
The operating-cost categories
HeatingWater heating and, for indoor pools, the surrounding environment.
Pumps & filtrationCirculation schedules, filtration and equipment efficiency.
Water treatmentTesting, sanitation and balancing.
CleaningManual or automated cleaning and consumables.
ServicingPlanned maintenance, callouts and seasonal work.
Lifecycle itemsCovers, finishes, liners, pumps, heaters and controls eventually need attention.
How to compare running-cost claims
Ask for the assumptions: pool dimensions, water temperature, season, hours of operation, cover performance, heating system, tariff and whether maintenance/service is included. Without those inputs, two quoted “monthly costs” may describe completely different pools.
